Momo Ko Jhol Achar: Nepali Momo Dipping Sauce
Momo Ko Jhol Achar is an essential component in Nepali cuisine, traditionally served as a flavorful and aromatic dipping sauce with the ever-popular Nepali momos. This sauce combines roasted soybean and sesame seeds with a tangy tomato base, infused with fresh coriander and mint for a refreshing finish. Perfectly balanced with spice and zest, this sauce is sure to elevate any serving of momos or other complementary dishes.
Ingredients
๐ฐ 1 cup soybean seeds
๐พ 1/3 cup white sesame seeds
๐ข๏ธ Sufficient amount of oil for frying
๐ฟ 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
๐ถ๏ธ 3 green chilies
๐ง 2 tsp chopped garlic and ginger
๐ 1/2 tsp turmeric powder

3 medium tomatoes, chopped
๐ง Salt
๐ถ๏ธ Red chili powder
๐ 1 whole lemon for 2 tsp lemon juice
๐ฟ Some fresh coriander leaves, chopped
๐ฟ Some mint leaves, chopped
Instructions
1- Roast Seeds:
- Heat a non-stick pan on an electric coil stove.
- Once hot, add the soybean seeds.
- Roast while stirring with a spatula until light brown and popping.
- Transfer to a bowl.
2- Roast Sesame Seeds:
- In the same pan, roast the sesame seeds until fragrant and popping.
- Add to the bowl.
3- Prepare Tomato Mixture:
- Heat sufficient oil in the pan.
- Add cumin seeds to the hot oil and let them splutter.
- Add green chilies, and chopped garlic and ginger.
- Fry until fragrant.
4- Cook Tomatoes:
- Stir in turmeric powder and chopped tomatoes.
- Add salt and red chili powder.
- Mix well.
- Cover the pan with a glass lid and let the mixture cook for about 2 minutes.
- Remove the lid after 2 minutes, ensuring the tomatoes have broken down.
- Turn off the heat.
5- Blend Ingredients:
- Stir in chopped coriander and mint leaves.
- Blend roasted seeds into a fine powder using Homgeek blender.
- Add cooked tomato mixture to the blender with powdered seeds.
- Blend with approximately 2 glasses of water.
6- Finalize and Serve:
- Pour into a white ceramic serving bowl.
- Squeeze 2 tsp lemon juice into the sauce and stir before serving.
