Ingredients:
- 1 sheet of fresh puff pastry (from the refrigerated section)
- 2 tablespoons of tomato paste
- 100 grams of grated Gouda cheese
- 1 tablespoon of milk (for brushing)
- A pinch of salt (optional)
- A pinch of black pepper (optional)
- Dried oregano (to taste)
- Sesame seeds for sprinkling (optional)
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 10-13 minutes
Total Time: 20-23 minutes
Equipment:
- Baking tray
- Parchment paper
- Pastry brush
- Knife
Cooking Tips:
- Make sure the puff pastry is cold when you start working with it to ensure it puffs evenly in the oven.
- Apply the tomato paste in a very thin layer as its flavor is quite intense.
- After adding the cheese, press it gently into the puff pastry so it sticks when you roll the twists.
Servings: 10 cheese twists
Instructions:
1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (356°F) and set it to both top and bottom heat. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
2. Begin by pouring the milk into a small bowl, which you'll use for brushing the cheese twists before baking.
3. Roll out the puff pastry sheet on a flat surface. Spread a thin layer of tomato paste across the pastry.
4. Season with a little bit of salt, black pepper, and dried oregano to taste, keeping in mind that the cheese is already salty.
5. Cut the puff pastry into roughly 2 cm wide strips to make a total of 10 cheese twists.
6. Evenly sprinkle the grated Gouda cheese over the pastry strips, pressing the cheese down gently to stick to the pastry.
7. Now, let's start rolling. Gently twist each strip by holding the ends and twisting them in opposite directions.
8. Place the twisted cheese sticks on the prepared baking tray, leaving some space between each one.
9. Brush the twists lightly with milk and, if you like, sprinkle some sesame seeds on top for an extra crunch.
10. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-13 minutes until they turn golden and crispy.
11. Allow the cheese twists to cool slightly before serving so they don't break.
