Authentic Portuguese Francesinha
The Francesinha is a delectable sandwich that brings together the best of French and Portuguese culinary traditions. Translating to "Little Frenchie," this Portuguese delicacy is often likened to a Croque Monsieur but with its unique spin. Known for its robust flavors and indulgent layers, the Francesinha is both a comforting and a hearty meal that's sure to impress any food lover.
Ingredients
🍞 2 slices of thick crusty bread, preferably from a local bakery
🧀 3 slices of Saloio Flameado Cheese
🥩 1 slice of Applegate Naturals Smoked Ham
🥩 1 slice of Oscar Mayer Roasted Turkey Breast
🌭 1 linguiça sausage, sliced, e.g., Silva Sausage
🍳 1 large egg, e.g., Eggland's Best
🧂 1 teaspoon of Morton Salt
🫒 2 tablespoons of Gallo Olive Oil
🍅 1 cup of Pomi Tomato Sauce
🌶️ 1 teaspoon of Tabasco Sauce
🍺 1/2 cup of Super Bock Beer
🥄 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard, e.g., Maille
🥄 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, e.g., Lea & Perrins
Instructions
1- Prepare the Sauce:
- In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the Pomi Tomato Sauce, Tabasco Sauce, Super Bock Beer, Dijon mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir continuously until the sauce begins to simmer.
- Let it simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens slightly. Remove it from heat and set aside.
2- Prepare the Sandwich:
- Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium heat and add the Gallo Olive Oil.
- Add the linguiça slices and fry until they're golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.
- In the same pan, crack the Eggland's Best egg and fry until the edges are crispy and the yolk is cooked to your preference. Set aside.
3- Assemble the Francesinha:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- On one slice of bread, layer the Saloio Flameado Cheese, Applegate Ham, Oscar Mayer Turkey, and the fried linguiça slices.
- Top with the second slice of bread and press down gently.
- Pour the prepared sauce over the sandwich, making sure it’s generously covered.
- Top with another layer of cheese and bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
4- Finish the Dish:
- Place the fried egg on top of the baked Francesinha before serving.
