Buñuelos, a staple in Bolivian cuisine, are delightful fried pastries often enjoyed as a sweet treat. This beloved snack pairs perfectly with a drizzle of honey or sugarcane syrup, offering a warm and comforting taste reminiscent of home.

Ingredients

🌾 4 cups Common Flour Type 4.0 or 3.0
🍬 4 tablespoons Sugar
🧂 1/2 tablespoon Salt
💧 2 cups Warm Water plus extra for dissolving anise and yeast
🌿 1 tablespoon Anise Seeds optional
🍞 20g Fresh Yeast or 10g Dry Yeast
🥚 2 Large Eggs
🛢️ Sufficient Frying Oil Vivo Pico
🍯 Sugarcane Honey or Bee Honey for serving

Instructions

1- Prepare the Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, add 4 cups of common flour.
  • In a small bowl, steep 1 tablespoon of anise seeds in a small amount of hot water. Allow it to sit and release its flavor.
  • In another bowl, dissolve 20g of fresh yeast or 10g of dry in a small amount of warm water.

2- Mix Ingredients:

  • Add the yeast mixture, 4 tablespoons of sugar, and 1/2 tablespoon of salt into the flour. Mix briefly.
  • Pour the anise-infused water into the flour mixture.
  • Crack 2 eggs into the mixture.
  • Gradually incorporate 2 cups of warm water while stirring to form a loose dough.

3- Knead the Dough:

  • Knead by hand for about 3 minutes until the dough is watery and soft.
  • Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rest in a warm area until it doubles in size 1-2 hours.

4- Shape and Fry:

  • Once the dough has risen, coat your hands with a bit of oil or water to prevent sticking.
  • Take small portions of dough and stretch them into flat, circular shapes.
  • Heat a substantial amount of frying oil in a pan over medium heat.
  • Fry each piece until golden brown on both sides, drizzling oil over the top during frying for even puffing.

5- Finish and Serve:

  • Drain the buñuelos on absorbent paper.
  • Serve them warm, drizzled with ample sugarcane or bee honey.
